It is safe to say that if you have a computer these days that it is either installed with Window XP, Windows Vista or the newest operating system Windows 7. Even though there are 3 different versions of windows listed here, there are multiple ways to speed up computer by doing tasks that can be done on each.
There is going to be some give and take when trying to optimize your computer to be as fast as possible. Some programs such as antivirus or malware protection will inevitably slow your computer down. However, the consequeses of not having a virus or malware program installed could be catastrophic in the end.
So now that you know that antivirus and malware software are going to slow your computer down, the trick is to configure them so that they have a minimal effect on computer performance, but a maximum effect on doing what they were installed to do and that is protect your computer.
For antivirus, I would recommend having real-time scan run all of the time. I typically never schedule full computer scans on my machine. If you insist on doing so, I would recommend doing it over night or during a period when you are not using your computer. There are several free antivirus programs available today that work pretty well. I personally use AVG, but AVAST also makes a free product that works very well.
For malware software, I would recommend that you set whatever program you use to not run all of the time in the background. In my experience, these programs have way to big of an effect on a computers performance. I would recommend just manually running a system scan about once a week with your favorite malware/spyware program. There are a few really good free programs out there available for download. My personal favorite is Malwarebytes. I think this program is miles ahead of the competition. Spybot is a close second and has been around a bit longer.
There are just some programs that your computer can’t live without. Learning how to configure those programs properly provides multiple ways to speed up computer.
