When was the last time you rebooted your computer to increase computer speed? A day, a week, a month…can’t remember? Rebooting your computer is the quickest, most effective way you can increase computer speed.
The computers of today are more powerful than ever. Pretty much every new machine you get now is a 64-bit machine and has at least 6 to 8 gigs of RAM. However, this really only means that the requirements for programs are sky-rocketing as well.
So what is computer memory and how does it increase computer speed?
When you start a program on your computer, it is loaded in memory. By memory, I am referring to RAM(Random Access Memory). This program will stay parked in RAM while it is running.
So what happensĀ when you use up all of your RAM?
So let’s say you have about 10 or 12 programs open, and your PC is running really slow. The most likely reason is because you have used up all or most of your RAM, and the computer is having to use a large amount of Virtual RAM(we will save this for another post).
You could instantly free up some of that memory just by closing out some of those programs, but what you may not know is that there still may be parts of the memory that are still being occupied even after you shut down some of your programs.
Having this occur over an extended period of time will really tend to slow down a computer. The only way you are going to clear out that memory for good is to either shutdown or reboot your computer.
How often should you reboot to increase computer speed?
I typically wouldn’t recommend shutting down every day. Why? Well, the electronic components in a computer are strained the most when starting up or shutting down. I would recommend a good reboot once a week. This will really help to speed your computer up.
By no means is rebooting your computer the ‘cure-all’ solution for increasing computer speed. Having a great piece of software like Uniblues Microsoft Certified SpeedUpMyPC 2010 is a great way to really make the necessary tweaks to make your machine run like a rocket and as a whole increase computer speed.
