By the looks of it, you are looking for some super easy tips to help you improve computer performance. There really is no reason in the world why you should have to pay the Geek Squad $200 dollars to look over your machine and basically do nothing to really help it. Ok…they might do a few things, but it most certainly isn’t worth the $200 dollars you spent.

Let’s quickly go over a some things you can do that will instantly help improve computer performance right way. I will try to explain these in a way that makes them easy to follow and do.

Don’t Clutter Your Desktop

I see this way too often, and I am even sometimes guilty of it. You save every file you create or file that you download on the internet to your desktop. It’s OK if you only do it one or two times, but when you can hardly see the desktop background because you a hundred files saved to your desktop then it is time to give it a cleaning. Utilize your My Documents folder. Save all of your files there. Simply put, that is what it is there for.

If you don’t believe me on the whole ‘files on the desktop deal’ then why would Microsoft remind you with a little bubble window that you have desktop icons that are more than 60 days old and that you should run the Desktop Cleanup Utility.

Having a clean desktop will help improve your computers performance.

Get Rid Of Unused Files

This really isn’t ground breaking news here, but clearing up disk space and deleting unused and temporary files will most certainly help improve computer performance. Temporary internet files will hog up a ton of space and cause for computer slow downs. Windows actually makes getting rid of temporary files and old unused files pretty easily. They created a tool called Disk Cleanup. It can be accessed by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. When you first run it, it will take a few minutes to scan your system and then come back with a list of file types and how much space they are taking up. I would recommend that anything taking up more than 5 or 10 megs be deleted. Just put a check in the box and then click OK to delete them. I would recommend a reboot after running Disk Cleanup.

It is safe to say that if you have a computer these days that it is either installed with Window XP, Windows Vista or the newest operating system Windows 7. Even though there are 3 different versions of windows listed here, there are multiple ways to speed up computer by doing tasks that can be done on each.

There is going to be some give and take when trying to optimize your computer to be as fast as possible. Some programs such as antivirus or malware protection will inevitably slow your computer down. However, the consequeses of not having a virus or malware program installed could be catastrophic in the end.

So now that you know that antivirus and malware software are going to slow your computer down, the trick is to configure them so that they have a minimal effect on computer performance, but a maximum effect on doing what they were installed to do and that is protect your computer.

For antivirus, I would recommend having real-time scan run all of the time. I typically never schedule full computer scans on my machine. If you insist on doing so, I would recommend doing it over night or during a period when you are not using your computer. There are several free antivirus programs available today that work pretty well. I personally use AVG, but AVAST also makes a free product that works very well.

For malware software, I would recommend that you set whatever program you use to not run all of the time in the background. In my experience, these programs have way to big of an effect on a computers performance. I would recommend just manually running a system scan about once a week with your favorite malware/spyware program. There are a few really good free programs out there available for download. My personal favorite is Malwarebytes. I think this program is miles ahead of the competition. Spybot is a close second and has been around a bit longer.

There are just some programs that your computer can’t live without. Learning how to configure those programs properly provides multiple ways to speed up computer.

A slow computer is something just about every computer user has to deal with at one time or another. Computer technology and the software we use on a daily basis seems to advance at a daunting pace that even I have a hard time keeping up with. Let me show you a few simple tips I do to speed up my computer.

TIP #1

You should uninstall every program on your computer that you do not actively use. Trust me; less is more when it comes to performance and the number of programs you have installed. When you install a program it add entries into the registry, takes up hard drive space, places icons on your desktop and potentially adds items to your computer startup. All of these things will have a negative effect on your computers performance. I would recommend running a certified registry cleaner after uninstalling any programs you do not use. This will ensure that all the remains of the programs uninstalled are deleted.

TIP #2

You should run Disk Defrag at least once a month. By doing this, you are looking at more of a long term benefit at making your computer run faster. As files get created and deleted, the hard drive will basically become very un-organized. You can think of it as someone whose job is to file papers. If they do not do it in an organized way, then their retrieval time for a specific file will not be very good. It works the same way with your computer’s hard drive. Running a Disk Defrag will organize the files on your hard drive. This is a must in order to speed up my computer.

TIP #3

Running Disk Clean Up once a week will really help keep your computer running fast. When you surf the net, there are pictures and temporary files downloaded to your computer from every site you visit. These files will never be deleted unless you tell your computer to delete them. This is done by running Disk Clean Up. It will also compress old files that aren’t used very much. This compression can really help free up a lot of hard drive space.

In conclusion, these are some of the things I do to speed up my computer. I would recommend that you do them as well. If you do, you will notice an improvement in your computers performance.

As a person who has been working on and with computers for about 15 years, I have seen many pieces of speed up computer software come and go. There are a multitude of free small utilities that I have in my arsenal, but most of those are used to tweak or configure one particular thing on a computer.

I wanted to take a few minutes of your time and tell you about the best software I have found yet that will help increase your computer speed. With SpeedUpMyPC 2010, you will be able to tweak your startup and probably disable 3 quarters of those programs to not run at startup.

With Uniblue, you get top of the line customer/technical support, free live updates, free product updates and you can also cover up the 3 PC’s with this software!

I almost forgot. They also package their System Tweaker software along with SpeedUpMyPC 2010. System Tweaker allow you to configure over 1,000 system tweaks that will make your computer run super fast!

In this post, you are going to learn some real simple but effective ways on how to improve PC performance. Its inevitable that you computer is going to slow down over time, but there are many things you can do to actually prevent this from happening over time.

Tip # 1 – Computer Memory: One of the biggest mistakes a person can do is to buy a machine that doesn’t have sufficient memory. Take note of what you are going to be using your computer for. Will you be gaming, checking email and creating word documents or will you be editing and creating graphics. All of these jobs do require different amounts of memory. If your PC is really slow or your computer freezes when you have several programs open, it is probably due to the lack of RAM in your computer. Adding RAM to increase computer speed is much more cost effective than buying a whole new computer.

Tip # 2 – Have a clean desktop: Maybe your not good at keeping your house or office clean, but not having a clean desktop is one of the biggest mistakes I think we all tend to make. Having a 100 icons on your desktop will definitely slow your computer startup time and also cause your computer to use more memory when it eventually does load. Let’s not forget the fact that actually trying to locate a shortcut will take you longer, thus you will be wasting valuable time. Utilize your ‘My Documents’ folder and clear off that desktop. You will see an increase in PC performance.

Tip # 3 – It’s time to Defrag: One of the best long-term strategies at keeping your computer working at peak performance is by running windows defrag on your hard drive. I recently wrote a post that was dedicated to how and why windows defrag can boost your computer speed. I would recommend running a defrag about once every month unless you make a big change to your computer. If you went in and did a bunch of house cleaning on your computer by deleting a whole bunch of files and programs, then I would recommend running a windows defrag after doing that. This would help to get your files organized on the actual hard drive resulting in better performance for you!

You have probably heard the term ‘windows defrag’ before and may have even gone as far as running it on your computer in an attempt to increase computer speed. I am willing to bet though that after running it, you really didn’t notice an increase in performance on your pc.

I would like to give a quick synopsis of what file fragmentation is and the effects it can have on your computer. I also want to give you some sound advice on whether windows defrag is worth running, and if it is, how often you should run it to increase computer speed.

What is file fragmentation and can you increase computer speed by fixing it?

Whenever a new computer is built and the OS is installed, files are pretty much written to the hard drive in a continuous manner…one right after another. The same can really be said about all of the programs that are then installed to complete the new computer setup. File fragmentation occurs when we(users) start to install and uninstall new/old programs, create/delete files and do something as simple as surfing the web. When a program is deleted, the portion of the hard drive where that program was stored is now open for use. Let’s say you then download another program and install it. There may be bits and pieces of that piece of software installed on those random open spots of the hard drive.

So how does file fragmentation effect the ability to increase computer speed?

If a program or file is installed on many different parts of a hard drive, the result can be that the hard drive works extra hard at I/O (input/output). As a result, the hard drive takes resources away from other read/write functions it needs to perform leaving you with a slower computer.

How often should you run windows defrag to increase computer speed?

I would recommend running windows defrag about once every month. Your not going to see an increased computer speed that blows your socks off, but over the long haul, your computer will work much more efficiently. It will do so because the files written to the drive will be in good order.

In the end, don’t over-estimate or under-estimate the effectiveness of windows defrag. If your looking to increase computer speed over the long term and keep your computer in proper running order, then windows defrag should be a staple in your computer maintenance routine.

When was the last time you rebooted your computer to increase computer speed? A day, a week, a month…can’t remember? Rebooting your computer is the quickest, most effective way you can increase computer speed.

The computers of today are more powerful than ever. Pretty much every new machine you get now is a 64-bit machine and has at least 6 to 8 gigs of RAM. However, this really only means that the requirements for programs are sky-rocketing as well.

So what is computer memory and how does it increase computer speed?

When you start a program on your computer, it is loaded in memory. By memory, I am referring to RAM(Random Access Memory). This program will stay parked in RAM while it is running.

So what happens when you use up all of your RAM?

So let’s say you have about 10 or 12 programs open, and your PC is running really slow. The most likely reason is because you have used up all or most of your RAM, and the computer is having to use a large amount of Virtual RAM(we will save this for another post).

You could instantly free up some of that memory just by closing out some of those programs, but what you may not know is that there still may be parts of the memory that are still being occupied even after you shut down some of your programs.

Having this occur over an extended period of time will really tend to slow down a computer. The only way you are going to clear out that memory for good is to either shutdown or reboot your computer.

How often should you reboot to increase computer speed?

I typically wouldn’t recommend shutting down every day. Why? Well, the electronic components in a computer are strained the most when starting up or shutting down. I would recommend a good reboot once a week. This will really help to speed your computer up.

By no means is rebooting your computer the ‘cure-all’ solution for increasing computer speed. Having a great piece of software like Uniblues Microsoft Certified SpeedUpMyPC 2010 is a great way to really make the necessary tweaks to make your machine run like a rocket and as a whole increase computer speed.

If you are looking for a one-stop shop to learn how to increase computer speed, then you have come to the right place. It always seems that no matter how powerful your computer is, it never seems like it is as fast as it should be. To cut to the chase, there are many factors as to why this happens and I intend to give you solid advice on how you can increase computer speed.

Keeping up with the latest and greatest hardware for computers is nearly impossible. I have been working with computer in the IT field for nearly 15 years, and even I have a hard time staying up to date with what is the news hardware available for computers.

Increase Computer Speed Is Driven By Real-life Experiences

In reality, it comes down to making the most of what you have. Not all of us have the cash flow to be buying a new computer every 1 or 2 years, so we need to make the most with what we have. It’s about how you can get the maximum speed by properly having your computer tuned up to work at its highest performance level.

Studies have shown that a computer can slow by as much as %30 after the first 3 months of being used. The average computer user tends to just put up with these slowdowns and doesn’t attempt to maximize their PC performance. There are simple, yet very effective tools that can be used as well as easy-to-do configuration changes that can be made to speed your computer up tremendously.

Don’t Waste Your Hard Earned Money Paying A ‘Professional’ To Increase Computer Speed

In fact, if you follow the steps and procedures this blog will lay out in very simple detail, you will be able to maintain that ‘new speed’ and possibly even get your PC to run better than it did when first purchased.

Some topics I intend on covering in this blog that will help get your computer to reach its maximum potential are:

How to optimize your computers startup time

File maintenance

Disk maintenance ( yes this is different than file maintenance)

Memory management

Max out your internet speed

A more advanced look at Services that do not need to be running in the back ground

I hope you bookmark this blog and read it regularly! I intend on spilling the beans on all the tricks that increase computer speed.

Stay tuned. This is only the beginning!

Cheers
